Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this project necessary?

Safety, reduced traffic congestion and shorter travel times for drivers make this project necessary.   170,000 vehicles use this congested 5.5 mile stretch of interstate every day. I-15 was first constructed in the late 1960’s and has never been reconstructed in this area.   The pavement and bridges are deteriorating, traffic congestion and safety concerns are increasing, and the valley’s population continues to grow at a vigorous pace.

What do you mean by design-build? How is this system beneficial?

“Design-build” is a system that is used in developing projects that reduces the project schedule by overlapping the design phase and construction phase of a project.   What does this mean for you?  It means you’ll be driving on a new and improved I-15 much faster than you would a typical construction project of this magnitude.

What is the construction schedule?

The first design phase began in September 2007. Construction should begin in early 2008, and the project is expected to be completed within three years (by Fall 2010).

How will construction affect my commute on I-15 during this time?

In order to maintain safety for construction crews and motorists and to help move the project forward, there will be some road closures and detours during the course of the project. NDOT will work to ensure that your commute is as congestion-free as possible by limiting the number of closures and detours.   We’ll be sure to notify area residents, businesses and motorists of related construction activity-early and often.

Who will work on this project?

North Corridor Constructors, LLC, a joint-venture between Las Vegas Paving Corporation and engineering consultants firm CH2M Hill, will be working on this project.

How much will the project cost?

The improvements to the I-15 North Corridor will cost $242 million.

How can I get more involved in this project?

NDOT will conduct a public information meeting to provide the members of the community an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about future transportation needs along I-15. The focus of this meeting is the I-15 from the I-15/US 95 “Spaghetti Bowl” interchanges to Craig Rd. in North Las Vegas.

The public information meeting will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at Kit Carson Elementary School, 1735 D Street, Las Vegas, NV 89106, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. The school is located between Lake Mead and Owens on D Street.
